Guide Program for Students (GPS)

Logo

The Guide Program for Students (GPS) is designed to help students successfully navigate their first year of college. It provides a great opportunity for new students to connect with personable, knowledgeable and caring professionals at the UAS campus. It is free and open to all first-year students living in UAS Housing, but requires registration to participate.

GPS “guides” are faculty/staff members who volunteer their time and expertise to help students get the most out of their university experience. Students and guides are matched based on similar interests and hobbies, or on related fields of study. A GPS “Meet & Greet” event during the first full week of classes provides an opportunity for students and guides to make connections and meet other members of the program. After that, participants are encouraged to attend two additional GPS events during fall semester and to meet on an occasional basis to share engaging conversation over coffee or lunch. Past participants have developed friendships lasting well beyond their university experience.

The program is supported by Activities & Housing, the Student Resource Center, and the Student Alumni Association.

How students can register: Contact Steve Laing, GPS Program Coordinator, by phone at 796-6368, or by e-mail steve.laing@uas.alaska.edu and provide your name, student ID number, and contact information. The GPS Team will take it from there and contact you with further details about the program. For answers to frequently asked questions related to student participation, go to Student FAQs.
