REU APPLICATION DIRECTIONS
The deadline for our 2008 REU summer program was Wednesday, February 27th 2008. Our 2008 projects can be read here.
Note that mail to Juneau takes longer (even priority and overnight services) and most mail is being processed by university mailrooms at both ends. As a rule of thumb, if the deadline is less than 6 business days away use electronic means of delivery as a backup. Items can be mailed seporately or put in one package provided that confidentaial matterials ( eg letters of reference and transcripts ) remain in thier sealed envelopes. To apply for this REU program:
- Arrange to have your current, official college transcripts sent to UAS. If needed, an unofficial copy can be faxed or emailed until the official one arrives.
- Arrange for 2 professors, instructors, or employers (ideally a biology professor and 1 other professional) to send us letters of recommendation that include comments on your academic ability, motivation, work habits, and potential for success in the program. We need a signed, mailed copy on university or agency letterhead. A copy can be faxed or attached to an email until the signed one arrives.
- In addition to the pair of professors that write letters for you, on the application form please provide the names and phone numbers for 2 more professors, instructors or employers whom we can call and talk with. They need to know your academic qualifications well enough to evaluate your potential for success in the program.
- Fill out our online application form.
- Send a cover letter (1-2 pages) describing why you want to participate in the REU field program, your interests in biology, your academic or career goals, which project or projects interest you most, and reasons why you believe you will benefit from and contribute to the program. If your application is being sent electronically, this letter can be sent as an attachment to the e-mail address below. Please do not send resumes.
- Keep copies of your application and cover letter for your records. Keep them at least until you are sure your materials have been received. A copy also helps if you plan to re-apply in the future.
- Check our received materials page several days before the deadline to be certain everything has arrived.
- When we have final decisions made we will notify all applicants ( via email ) of their status.
