A fall symposium of lectures as part of the annual Sitka WhaleFest’s. World-renowned scientists come to Sitka to share their current research findings on a wide range of subjects during a three-day symposium. This innovative science outreach program gives future scientists and life-long learners opportunities to meet and learn from a diverse group of scientists who are passionate about their research. Each afternoon, symposium participants and guest speakers will explore a daily theme connected to the overall them of the symposium. To pass, students must attend an introductory class (can be in class, by audio or web), all symposium lectures, daily in a marine wildlife viewing cruise, and provide written summaries of the lectures by the end of the semester. Students must be registered for the Sitka WhaleFest. Theme: The Mysteries of Our Changing Seas will expose the Indicators: events that through research we now know are signs that things were changing. We’ll explore the Puzzle Pieces: new research questions and techniques that may lead to the indicators of the future. When all of this information is combined we’ll discuss the Impacts: what’s occurring and what it means for the present and future of our changing seas.

A research paper, project, or a professional portfolio, jointly approved by the student's graduate committee and the student; to coincide with the student's professional objectives. The portfolio should document the required knowledge and ability to apply the standards set by the Alaska College of Education (AKCoE).
