TITLE: AMERICORPS Program Member.
RESPONSIBLE TO: Alaska Americorps Literacy
Program administered by Nine Star Enterprises,
Anchorage, Alaska.
This Americorps site (Sitka) is supervised by the Learning
Center Director, Sitka Campus University of Alaska
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Required: Bachelor's Degree.
Preferred: Teaching or tutoring experience.
Computer skills including internet experience; Ability to
tutor basic skills to adults including reading, writing,
basic math, GED preparation.
Personal Qualities: mature,
self-directed, patient, able to work with students and co-workers
in a positive way. Must have excellent organization skills
and be able to work in a self-directed job situation. Must
be able to communicate well both speaking and writing. Must
be able to drive to various community locations in Sitka
or be physically able to commute on foot or by bicycle.
This position is particularly suited for persons
who believe in concept of community service or persons who
want to develop work experience in areas of education or
social service.
Persons receiving Public Assistance may apply for this position,
but should discuss the effects of the living stipend on
benefits with the Public Assistance Office.
The applicant cannot be a full-time college
student or have other full-time employment. Limited work or
school is acceptable.
The successful applicant may be required to
travel for training workshops in Anchorage or Juneau.
POSITION SUMMARY: This is a volunteer
position through the federal Americorps /VISTA Program (Corporation
for National Service).
Duties/Activities include:
Training Activities: Local training and orientation. Possible
National Service orientation workshops or training sessions
in Anchorage and Juneau (pending funding.)
Project Activities: This
positions involves teaching and tutoring in the Sitka Adult
Education Program. Activities include tutoring basic reading,
math, English, GED preparation; developing community service
workshops, program promotion, testing; assisting adults
in job seeking activities (resume writing, developing job
search skills and interviewing skills.) Additional college
tutoring opportunities depending on experience.
SALARY: This is a volunteer
position. The program will provide the following:
$950/mo Living allowance (before taxes)
$2230 Child Care Supplement
Full Health Insurance.
Social Security (FICA)
$4725 Education Award upon completion of contract obligations.
All travel expenses for training provided.
