Sacred vessels are narrow at the bottom and wide at the top with an additional piece that fits on top, rings and realistic head. Inspired by African, native American, and Alaska Native traditions. Students will produce at least one sacred vessel and a flat wall piece. Both Raku and high firing methods will be used.

Andreas Goff Sacred Vessel

Born in New England, Andreas Goff knew he wanted to be an artist when, at age four, he begged Santa for an easel. Andreas has done several of the annual Zora Neale Hurston Festival juried art shows in Florida. Zora was part of the Harlem Renaissance, along with Langston Hughes. “I’m usually the only white artist in the juried show, and I am quite honored that my work is well received and appreciated there.” The elegance of African scarves and head wraps challenges the artist to capture pride and beauty depicting these subjects. His work is in private collections and galleries throughout the U.S. Andreas has been an artist-in-residence for the state of New Mexico for four years.

Participants will cruise breathtaking Southeast Alaska waterways, beginning in Sitka and stopping at Kake and Hoonah before returning to Sitka. While in the towns and villages, students will see examples of basketry, weaving, totem carving, silver carving while learning about both historical and contemporary art.

On board interpreters Delores Churchill and Robert Davis Hoffman will present workshops during the course of the cruise and again at UAS Sitka Campus while the class is in Sitka. An Allen Marine Wildlife Cruise is also scheduled.

Throwing...Developing Personal Style...Looking Inside
Once some degree of proficiency is achieved on the potters’ wheel, the next step is to bring personal expression to the anonymous thrown pot. Look both inside yourself and outside at your external environment. What inspires you? Music? Nature? Architecture? Form what is relevant to you as an individual into your pieces.
Prerequisites:
Commitment to yourself and the group–the ability to work diligently and to share yourself and your work. “Some degree of proficiency” is purposefully vague. At a minimum, however, students should be able to reliably throw a 10-inch cylinder.

Steven Hill received his BFA from Kansas State University and since that time he has been a professional studio potter. His work is exhibited and sold in nationally juried shows and is featured in many ceramics books and publications. He has conducted well over 100 workshops throughout the United States and Canada and has written numerous ceramic articles. In 1998, Steven co-founded Red Star Studios Ceramic Center which includes a gallery of contemporary functional clay, private studios, and a studio for classes and workshops. Steven has participated in a wide variety of invitational exhibitions as well as one and two person exhibitions. His aspiration is to capture the moment when soft clay and fluid slip coalesce with clarity of purpose as a functional pot.
