This is a one week course, part of which students will be traveling on an Allen Marine catamaran to the villages of Kake and Hoonah.  Robert Hoffman will be sharing information about Tlingit history of the Southeast Alaska and Form Line Design. Delores Churchill, who is the foremost weaver in the region, will be teaching students the fundamentals of basketry so that each student will have accomplished a small basket by the end of the week.  Other activities will include a tour of the Sitka National Historic Park and its collection, Sheldon Jackson Museum and a wildlife tour on Allen Marine.
To participate, students must register for both ART 263-T01 and ART 282-T01.

Participants will pay their transportation costs to and from Sitka, their tuition and fees, and lodging at each site. Camping may be an option; bring a sleeping bag if you wish to camp.

A survey of the visual arts of the Northwest Coast Native peoples. Traditional methods, materials and images will be discussed within their cultural and historical context.

An introduction to basket weaving practiced by coastal Indians of Alaska. Projects will include twined or plated weaving in spruce roots or cedar bark to produce a basket or plaited hat, with particular attention to traditional standards if design. $20 materials fee to be paid directly to instructor.

UAS reserves the right to cancel any class when minimum enrollment is not met. Registration must be received by the deadline indicated for each workshop. Full refund will be made up to the registration deadline. No refunds after that date.
