UAS NETWORK CHARGES:
The purpose of the Network Charge is to cover rapidly rising costs, especially in the maintenance and enhancement of our university-wide technology infrastructure.
The charge will be applied at a 2% rate on a course by course basis to tuition, non-resident surcharge if applicable, and fees in lieu of tuition, for credit and non credit courses. Courses with applicable fees less than the lower division credit hour tuition rate ($128 for Academic Year 2006-2007) will be exempt from the charge. All calculated fees will be rounded to the nearest dollar.

This is an introduction to visual communication. The emphasis will be on grammatical foundations for American Sign Language. Introduction to the American Deaf Culture, its mores and significant issues. Lectures will provide demonstrations of ASL discourse as well as analysis and derivations, signs and grammatical structures. The required weekly lab will provide a setting for pragmatic applications of linguistic principles.

Introduction to basic fur/skin sewing through the creation of a hand sewn sea otter or beaver fur/skin pillow. Students will learn the history, pertinent biological facts, regulations (federal and tribal) regarding the use of sea otter, proper hide care, and overview of commercial tanning. Note: Federal law requires those wishing to work with sea otter skins provide photo-identification along with documentation (tribal or BIA) that indicates they are a minimum of ¼ blood quantum Alaska Native. Those students who do not meet the blood quantum requirements will use beaver fur/skin instead. Sitka Tribal Tannery will be used for a tannery lecture and blocking lab. Class limit: 20. A fall symposium of lectures as part of the annual Sitka WhaleFest: A Celebration of Marine Wildlife. Marine scientists will present current research findings on topics focused on marine life around the Pacific Rim, with an emphasis on marine mammals. To pass, students must attend an introductory class (can be in class, by audio or web), all symposium lectures, daily follow-up discussions with invited researchers, participate in a marine wildlife viewing cruise, and provide written summaries of the lectures by the end of the semester. Students must be registered for the SitkaWhaleFest. These costs ($70 for the symposium and cruise) will be collected at the same time the student registers for the course at UAS.

On Campus Class Practicum: Migration Patterns and Demographics

Students enrolled in this course will be selected by an application and interview process. They will help create an updated catalog of humpback whale identification photographs and computerized database (0.5 credit each semester) and travel to Hawai’i, the migratory destination of humpback whales which feed in the waters of southeastern Alaska, and experience a cultural exchange by participating in field research offerings with University of Hawai’i at Hilo (Dr. Jason Turner) and the Hawai’i Marine Mammal Consortium (HMMC).

Marine scientists will present current research findings on topics focused on marine life around the Pacific Rim, with an emphasis on marine mammals. To pass, students must attend an introductory class (can be in class, by audio or web), all symposium lectures, daily follow-up discussions with invited researchers, participate in a marine wildlife viewing cruise, and provide written summaries of the lectures by the end of the semester. Students must be registered for the SitkaWhaleFest. Class limit: 30

UAS Sitka supports students taking the Special Education program originating from both Sitka and Fairbanks.
