communication. The emphasis will be on grammatical foundations for
American Sign Language. Introduction to the American Deaf Culture,

structures. The required weekly lab will provide a setting for pragmatic
applications of linguistic principles.

Weekly lab is required to acquire intermediate levels of ASL fluency and pragmatic application of linguistic principles.

They will help create an updated catalog of humpback whale identification photographs and computerized database and travel to Hawaii, the migratory destination of humpback whales which feed in the waters of southeastern Alaska, and experience a cultural exchange by participating in field research offerings with University of Hawaii at Hilo (Dr. Jason Turner) and the Hawai’i Marine Mammal Consortium (HMMC). Prerequisites: An interest in gaining experience in scientific research is necessary to enroll in this course. It will be offered to 5 students selected from an interview and application process.
