Health Information Technology and Management Information Systems in the US:
  Contact Hours 90

This course traces the development of IT systems in health care and public health, beginning with the experiments of the 1950s and 1960s, culminating in the HITECH Act, and introducing the concept of meaningful use.
The second module is specific to health care and public health applications, introducing Health IT standards, health-related data structures, software applications, and enterprise architecture for health organizations.
The third module provides an overview of the most popular vendor systems highlighting the features of each as they would relate to practical deployments, and noting differences between the systems.

Working with Health IT Systems and Configuring EHRs:
  Contact Hours 60

In this course individuals will experience working with a simulated system playing the role of practitioner. Exercises will address what is happening “under the hood”; threats to security and the need for standards; high levels of usability; and how errors can occur.
The second module covers approaches to assessing, selecting, and configuring EHRs to meet the specific needs of customers and end-users.
Tech Info – This class will utilize the VistA CPRS (Computerized Patient Record System). A copy of the program will be provided to you via a DVD to load onto your personal computer. In order for the VistA CPRS to install and run properly on the PC, the PC must have 5 gigabytes of available space on the hard drive. The VistA CPRS will run on Windows 2000, XP Pro, Vista, or 7. The VistA CPRS has been reported to run smoothly on XP Home as long as it is not used in a networked environment. Students are advised however that XP Home is not a supported operating system for the VistA CPRS.

Workflow Process Analysis, Redesign, and Project Management for Health IT:

This course addresses the fundamentals of health workflow process analysis and redesign as a necessary component of complete practice automation; includes topics of process validation and change management.
The second module covers the use of project management tools and techniques that result in the ability to create and follow a Health IT deployment plan.

Usability, Human Factors, and Quality Improvement in Health IT:
  Contact Hours 60

This course covers rapid prototyping; user-centered design and evaluation; usability; understanding effects of new technology and workflow on downstream processes; and facilitation of a unit-wide focus group and/or simulation.
The second module introduces the concepts of Health IT and practice workflow redesign as instruments of quality improvement; establishing a culture that supports increased quality and safety; and approaches to assessing patient safety issues and implementing quality management and reporting through electronic systems.

Installation and Maintenance of Health IT Systems, Networks, and HIEs:
  Contact Hours 60

This course provides instruction in installation and maintenance of Health IT systems, including testing prior to implementation and principles underlying system configuration.
The second module covers in-depth analysis of data mobility including the hardware infrastructure (wires, wireless, and devices supporting them), the ISO stack, standards, Internet protocol, federations and grids, the NHIN and other nationwide approaches.

Professionalism, Customer Service, and Training Techniques for Implementing Health IT:
