Do I need special equipment to take distance classes?^
Yes, depending upon the method of instruction. (see Types of Delivery for examples) In some sites the equipment is provided or available for students use.

Does distance education cost more than classes held on campus?^
Tuition, technology fees and book/material fees are the same for distance and on-campus courses; any student taking distance delivered classes are required to pay distance fees.

How do I register for classes?^
Register for classes by contacting the local site coordinator or calling the Distance Education Office at 800-478-6653, extension 7721 or 7757. Registrations may be faxed to 800-478-3552.

Do I have to be in a UAS degree program to take classes?^
No, it is not necessary. However, classes taken before applying for a specific degree program cannot be guaranteed as meeting requirements for a program if the requirements change.

Is financial aid available for distance delivered classes?^
Yes in most instances if the student is admitted to a degree program. Financial aid does not fund year long correspondence.Most forms of financial aid require that the student be enrolled in at least 6 credits (half time status) to qualify. Students may take classes from more than one UA campus and still be eligible for financial aid.

Where do I apply for financial aid?^
Work through the financial aid office at the university (UAA, UAS, UAF) that will award the degree. That is the home university. For example, students may take classes from UAA, UAF, and UAS but the financial aid award is made and disbursed by the home university.

How do I apply for a degree program?^
Students should consult with an academic advisor or a faculty member before applying for admission. Career possibilities, availability of courses, and the technology involved all need to be discussed. (Some degrees are not totally available by distance delivery.) Applications are available from local site coordinators or as downloadable forms from the Internet.

How do I get my materials?^
In most cases your syllabus may be downloaded from UAS OnLine once you have registered and payment arrangements have been made. Books are obtained from MBS Direct and that information will be given to you at the time of registration

How do I communicate with my instructor?^
You can phone, fax, email, or mail your instructor directly (contact information is usually found on the front page of your class syllabus). You may also contact us in the Instructional Services Office 1-800-478-6653, ext. 7721 or 7757 and we would be glad to assist you in contacting your instructor.

Do I have to go onto campus for classes?^
Some degree programs may have an on-campus component. Technology used in some classes may require that the student attend at a common community site. Students located in a community with a UA location (perhaps the school district) attend at the central location unless they are the only student in that community enrolled in a specific class.

How do I get class textbooks and materials?^
Check the specific class information but in most cases textbooks for UAS courses are to be ordered from MBS Direct, a text book distributor. Students may reach them by toll free phone, fax, or online. (1-800-325-3252, fax at 1-800- 499-0143).

How do I take tests?^
Placement Tests
Available for math, English, and CIOS. Students should contact their local UA coordinator, or the Distance Education Office at 1-800-478-6653, ext. 7721 or 7757
Proctored Class Tests
Students may be required to locate someone in the community (UA coordinator, schoolteacher, clergyman, government employee, librarian) who will agree to administer tests. The proctor completes an Agreement Form given them by the student and mails or faxes the form to the faculty or Distance Office. All exams are mailed/faxed to the Distance Office.
