Experiential Learning
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.
—Aristotle

There are many opportunities for students in social science to get hands-on experience in their major field of study. This may well enhance their career prospects or their chances of being accepted into graduate school. To name a few:
• A long-term established program involving students from across the state:
The Alaska Universities Legislative Internship Program
Some short-term opportunities students have participated in over the past few years:
•
Study-abroad experience in France for one month in summer for History
• Archeological research experience in Misty Fjords National Monument Ethnographic research in Prince William Sound and Glacier Bay National Park
On-going development of internship/research opportunities in Juneau:
• Internships with
Alaska Mental Health Trust;
Alaska Departments of Public Safety,
Revenue, and
Transportation;
Alaska Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, etc. Undergraduate research opportunities in Applied Child Psychology Research collaboration with the
U.S. Forest Service
Experiential knowledge is an invaluable tool for students as they investigate some of the career options in the fields of study they are interested in pursuing. UAS social science faculty is continually developing additional opportunities to provide students with this beneficial aspect of their education. Be on the look out for more exciting opportunities coming your way!
