MPA FAQs

What's the difference between an MPA and an MBA?

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is a management degree for those pursuing a career in the private sector. It deals with market realities and profit goals.

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) is a management degree for those pursuing a career in the public sector. It deals with management under political realities and public interest goals.

What if I do not work in the government or non-profit sectors?

While the MPA program at UAS is targeted at current public and non-profit managers, it is not restricted. Those aspiring to a career in the public sector may undertake the degree program, but have the additional requirement of a public or non-profit internship.

Is a graduate degree a worthwhile investment?

Whether you're in the midst of your career or just out of college, graduate school might be the next step for you to pursue. This may be one of the most important decisions of your professional life. Part of the decision is weighing the short-term costs of graduate studies against long-term benefits. As more and more people acquire undergraduate degrees, the top positions in organizations are being filled by individuals who have further developed their understanding of their field through a master's degree.

Who should get an MPA from UAS?

The MPA is a professional degree for public managers. Most (but not all) students in the MPA program at UAS are full time public or non-profit managers. The program is directed toward part time study and classes are held in the evenings.

The MPA is most appropriate for managers who have a particular content expertise (e.g. natural resources, social services, healthcare, military, education), but who need to acquire higher management skills and education for further advancement.
