1. COURSE SCHEDULE
The course scheduling for summer and fall has been updated on the MPA website. http://www.uas.alaska.edu/mpa/ancourse.htm Please remember this page and consult it in your planning. Get back to me with any questions. Every Fall and Spring we offer the same courses - although the days of the week may change. We offer electives each summer which change annually - with the exception of PADM 675 Leadership Communications which we have been offering every year. See item 2
2. LEADERSHIP COMMUNICATIONS
I want to make a strong pitch to you to consider taking PADM 675 as one of your electives. Communications skills are probably THE most important factor in determining professional success. This class addresses public speaking, group and interpersonal dynamics and written communications.Because public speaking and verbal communications are difficult to do in a distance environment, that segment of the class is packed into a five day intensive in Juneau - usually the third week of May. This year it is May 22-26. While I know traveling to Juneau is a big commitment for some, I encourage you to consider it, not just for the extremely important skills training we do - but also to see the Juneau UAS campus and Juneau, in general.During the week we usually do some socializing. If you stay for part of the weekend you can do a bit of touring as well. Housing may be reserved on campus with rates beginning at $40 per night.
3. SUMMER CLASSES
Make plans now for your summer classes. Note that Kevin Ritchie will be teaching Intergovernmental Relations on Thursday evenings and that Kathy DiLorenzo will teach the Public Manager and the Policy Process on Wednesday evenings. For the summer classes will run from 6:00 pm - 8:45, Alaska time.
4. TIME CHANGE POSSIBILITY- I NEED YOUR FEEDBACK
Because undergraduate business classes are migrating to the Web - the MPA program has the potential to offer classes beginning at 6 pm rather than 7 during the regular school year. I need your input. Would you rather have classes begin and end earlier? I can see it both ways. On the one hand, everyone likes to end earlier. On the other hand, a 7pm start allows many people to go home after work and have dinner. Please email me your thoughts on this.
5. FAMOUS SPEECHES COVERING 30 YEARS
A fascinating website from Harvard University can be found at http://ksgaccman.harvard.edu/iop/events_forum_listview.asp. The Institute of Politics has a searchable video archive spanning thirty years of public addresses and panel discussions held in the John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum (formerly the ARCO Forum of Public Affairs). The archive, featuring nearly 1,200 Forum events on politics, policy, culture, and academic life, will provide rich historical content and context to students, researchers, and citizens from around the world. Check this one out.
