1. NEW STUDENTS
If you are new to the MPA program, you need to do some self-orientation to our technologies. First watch the 30 minute introduction posted on the MPA website. You need to have the free Real Player on your computer. Each class has a course website where you will find the syllabus and participate in online discussions. See the links to classes below. Watch the UAS Online introduction at http://www.uas.alaska.edu/faculty_support/UASOnlinev3/studentvideo/uasonline.html to find out how to get your userid and password and log into UAS Online. Make sure you upload a picture of yourself. I will provide lots of orientation to all this in PADM 601.

2. Register for Classes
Don’t wait till the last minute. Register for classes now! Classes begin Thursday September 1st.

3. Order Textbooks Right Away
Non-Juneau students need to order textbooks immediately to ensure they arrive before classes begin September 1. Find your textbooks on your course webpage (links above) or through MBS Direct. You can order your books through MBS or any online bookseller. If you are looking for used textbooks from other sites, make sure you get the correct edition.

4. UAS Phone Numbers Have Changed
UAS-Juneau phone numbers have changed their prefix from the 465 to 796. The rest of the number remains the same. For example, my phone number is now 796-6356. Toll free numbers remain the same- 1-800-478-9069 for the Department, 1-888-219-2596 for the satellite classroom.

5. JOB

6. Scholarship
The National Public Employer Labor Relations Association Scholarship announcement. Graduate students in Public Administration are invited to apply. More information is available at http://npelra.org/articles/foundation0605.asp. The deadline for applications is September 30.

7. Student/Alumni News
Jennifer Gorsuch (03) has taken a new job as Manager of Human Resources for the City of Camas, Washington, which is across the river from Portland. Congratulations, Jennifer.

8. MPA Website
Please take a few minutes to re-familiarize yourself with the MPA website at http://www.uas.alaska.edu/mpa/. I continually change things here and there. New policies are applicable. The 05-06 catalog is now online. Make sure you know what is available. Note the link to “Student Tools.” Let me know if you find any broken links or if you have suggestions for improving the site and making it more useful for you.

9. UAA Professor Steve Aufrecht and Public Administration Review
Make sure you read the article by UAA MPA professor Steve Aufrecht in the current (July) issue of Public Administration Review (PAR). “Indians 78, Washington State 0: Stories about Indians and the Law”
