1. MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
Earlier this month several MPA students ran for local elections. Linda Swarner won her 7th consecutive three year term on the Kenai City Council-- once again with the highest vote count of all candidates. Congratulations, Linda. Margaret Gilman made the switch from school board to Kenai Borough Assembly. Sitka student Mollie Kabler won a smashing reelection victory to the Sitka School Board over “Unopposed.” In Juneau, political neophyte Jonathan Anderson won a seat on the City and Borough Assembly, while MPA student Mara Early made a gallant, but alas unsuccessful, effort for a separate Assembly seat. Now she can return to work on her degree!!!. Pat Duncan continues to sit on the Yukon Legislative Assembly as the lone Liberal . If I have missed others please let me know!!!
2. WELCOME KATHY DILORENZO
New public administration professor Kathy DiLorenzo is settling into life at the University of Alaska Southeast. This semester, besides teaching Research Methods, she is furiously working to complete her Dissertation from the Idaho State University tentatively titled “Accountability in Public Organizations: the Challenge of Privatization.” In the Spring Kathy will teach PADM 688 Program Evaluation, the MBA Research Methods class and an undergraduate class in Organizational Theory and Behavior. She is also working on revising our MPA Brochures and on program assessment. I love to have Kathy around. Now I can “delegate!”

6. JOIN ASPA
The American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) is one of two main professional organizations for public managers. The other is ICMA, the International City County Management Association. I encourage MPA students to join one of these organizations and to remain active in your professional development. ASPA has student rates of membership and membership includes subscriptions to Public Administration Review (PAR) and the monthly newspaper PA Times. Check out their websites. ASPA can be found at http://www.aspanet.org ICMA is at http://www.icma.org.
7. PRESIDENTIAL MANAGEMENT FELLOWS PROGRAM
Those interested in national government should be aware of something called the Presidential Management Fellows program or PMF. The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program was established by Executive Order in 1977 to attract to the Federal service outstanding men and women from a variety of academic disciplines and career paths who have a clear interest in, and commitment to, excellence in the leadership and management of public policies and programs. By drawing graduate students from diverse social and cultural backgrounds, the PMF Program provides a continuing source of trained men and women to meet the future challenges of public service. For more information on this program please see http://www.pmf.opm.gov/howover.asp
