3. Tuition and Class Fees
Tuition and fees are a fairly complicated calculation. Pages 25 and 26 of the UAS Catalog provide the details.http://www.uas.alaska.edu/catalog/documents/05_06/welcome.pdf
Tuition for a 3 credit graduate class is $732. Fees, however, are complex and depend on how many credits you are taking and whether you are a Juneau Please read pages 25 and 26 of the catalog carefully and contact Jonathan with questions. resident.
Please note the “Alumni Fee” of $15 for Juneau students taking 6 credits of more. This fee is optional-- but you have to contact the cashier to decline membership. Again, only for Juneau students taking 6 credits or more.
4. Elective Planning
Students in the MPA program have the opportunity to take three electives. Each summer UAS offers several electives applicable to the MPA degree. PLEASE NOTE THAT PADM 671 HAS CHANGED. IT IS NO LONGER ON EMPLOYMENT LAW, BUT IS ON THE POLICY PROCESS-- SEE BELOW.
This summer the following classes will be offered:
1. PADM 675 Leadership Communications- This class, taught by Jonathan Anderson focuses on organizational communication both oral and written. The class consists of a five day intensive session held in Juneau May 22-26, followed by independent study assignments continuing through the summer.
2. PADM 615 Intergovernmental Relations. This class, taught by Kevin Ritchie, explores the world of networked governance. Different governments at all levels, no-profits and private sector contractors all work together to accomplish public policy. Managing that complex environment is the subject of this class which will be taught on the satellite.
3. PADM 671 Public Managers and the Policy Process Kathy DiLorenzo. Kathy’s course description states:
In today’s multifaceted bureaucratic environment managers are called upon to decide among policy options, implement policy, negotiate with stakeholders and anticipate changes. To be successful, managers must understand their role as facilitator in the political process. This class will use examples from contemporary Alaska policy controversies to illustrate the policy process concerns facing managers in a changing and complex environment.
See http://www.uas.alaska.edu/mpa/elect.htm for more details on elective options.
5. Admissions Paperwork-- Complete before 4th class
Please submit your application for admission as soon as possible. Students must be fully accepted before enrolling in their 4th PADM class. That means if you took two classes in the fall, you cannot enroll for two more in the Spring until your admission file is processed. Please do not let this slide. It is not a difficult process. Have undergraduate transcripts sent directly to UAS. Please review the MPA site - http://www.uas.alaska.edu/mpa/howtoapp.htm
6. Congratulations to Mollie Kabler and Kris Sell
Mollie Kabler has worked for a number of years as student adviser at the UAS-Sitka campus. At the same time she has also been an elected member of the Sitka School Board (and was President in the last term). She has recently been hired as Executive Director of CoastAlaska which is the Administrative umbrella organization for five Southeast Public Radio stations (Juneau, Sitka, Petersburg, Wrangell and Ketchikan)

Kris Sell is in her eighth year as an officer with the Juneau Police Department- for the past few years as sergeant. Kris recently passed the examination for Lieutenant and will soon become the first female Lieutenant in the history of the force. Please call her Ma’am from now on. [Little known fact: In a previous life Kris was a TV Newscaster in Montana!]
Send your Congratulations to both of them!
7. Conference Confusion
Last newsletter I erroneously reported that the American Society of Public Administration (ASPA) would hold their annual conference in Seattle. The Conference - March 31 to April 4 will be in Denver. For details see http://www.aspanet.org/scriptcontent/index_conferences.cfm
The Public Administration Theory Network (PATNET) will hold its annual conference at Olympia, Washington February 9-10. For more details see http://www.evergreen.edu/events/patnet/
Attending a public administration conference is always a great experience. Please let me know if you have an interest.
