1. FALL REGISTRATION CLOSES AUGUST 24
Fall registration ends August 24. After that, students need departmental permission to register. Closing registration a week before class makes certain students have the time to order textbooks and other necessary supplies and to make sure there are enough students registered for a class. In the past students have registered the day of class and are unable to proceed with initial assignments because they don't have their books. Or a class has been dropped for low enrollment and students have to scramble for an alternative. [This is more likely with undergraduate courses.]
Note: Students taking PADM610 Organizational Theory and Behavior will “attend” class via “Elluminate” software and need to secure a headset with boom microphone. Please monitor your UAS Online class site for information on classes
2. CLASSES BEGIN AUGUST 31
This year classes begin on Thursday August 31. This compensates for the fact that there are no classes for Thanksgiving Holiday Thursday November 23. All classes will have 14 weeks of class plus an exam week December 11-15.

4. NEW ECONOMICS PROFESSOR STEFANIE CARLSON
This Fall we have a new instructor for PADM 625 Economics of Public Policy. Stefanie Carlson is an Economist for the State of Alaska Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission
She has a BS in Natural Resources and Environmental Studies and a Masters Degree in Economics. Stefanie did research at University of Alaska Fairbanks on “Feedbacks Between Climate, Caribou, and Local Communities in Northwestern Alaska,” and has served as a Staff Assistant with Senator Ted Stevens. While with the Entry Commission Stefanie has authored numerous papers on fisheries management in Alaska. We are glad to have her on the MPA team.
5. ONLY DISTANCE SECTIONS
In the past MPA classes have included three sections; Juneau, Distance and Military. This has often led to confusion. This year we eliminated Juneau The main impact on students will be that Juneau students will no longer be able to purchase books at the Auke Bay campus bookstore, but will need to order them online. Juneau students will need to be more conscious about ordering books early (as non-Juneau students already have to do. and Military sections and now everyone will register for the JD-1 section.
6. NEW WEBSITE COMING
UAS is going through website updating and the MPA site will soon be renovated. Once again I need to hear suggestions from you on what would make the site more useful and effective. Please email me.
7. ELECTIONS AND CAMPAIGN FINANCE
Show me the Money!!!
We all know that money is a huge influence on elections. Here in Alaska we have a Campaign Finance initiative on the primary ballot next Tuesday. There are a number of websites out there that help you find out where a candidate gets their money. The Alaska Public Offices Commission (APOC) requires all candidates to list where their money came from and how it has been spent. This is public information and can be found online at http://www.state.ak.us/apoc/campaign.htm
There are also several internet sites that track state and national candidates and their contributions. I think you will find the following sites interesting.
