MPA COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER CLARK GRUENING « Back to Topics

For the past 8 years the MPA program has held its own Graduation Commencement broadcast over the satellite and streamed over the internet so that those who cannot come to Juneau can still participate in graduation -- along with their friends and relations around the world. The 2007 MPA Commencement will be held Monday May 7 from 6-7 pm Alaska time. Our guest speaker will be Clark Gruening. Mr. Gruening is the grandson of Ernest Gruening, Alaska’s Territorial Governor, US Senator, and for whom the Gruening Award for outstanding MPA graduate is named. Clark Gruening has also been an prominent public servant, serving two terms in the Legislature in the 70s and was a framer of the Alaska Permanent Fund.   We are honored at his participation and invite everyone to mark the date on their calendar.

SABBATICAL YEAR FOR ANDERSON « Back to Topics

Professors at UA are eligible for sabbatical leaves every 6 years or so for “study, formal education, research or other experiences of professional value…. The objective of such leave is to increase the unit member's value to the University and thereby improve and enrich its programs.”  After 8 ½ years at UAS -- and after gaining an outstanding colleague in Kathy DiLorenzo -- I applied for and was granted a sabbatical leave for the 2007-2008 school year.  During that time I will study state budget and financial issues, particularly those impacting municipalities.  I hope to collaborate on various projects with ISER (Institute for Social and Economic Research) and the Alaska Municipal League (AML).  So during the 07-08 year I will not be teaching classes and will leave the administration of the program in Dr. DiLorenzo’s capable hands.

PERSONAL NOTES « Back to Topics

Barbara Ruckman- (current student from Kenai) - has been awarded Alaska’s “Businessman of the Year” award by the National Republican Congressional Committee and will travel to Washington DC in March to meet with various dignitaries, including President Bush, and will serve as Honorary Chairman of the House Republican Trust and 2007 Republican Business Summit.  Congratulations Barbara.

Alan Sorum (2002) has been hired as City Manager for the city of Skagway.  Alan previously was Harbor Director for Valdez and before that in Wrangell.  Congratulations Alan.

Mike Mullen (2004) currently LtCdr at the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station in Traverse City, Michigan, has been selected to attend a one year intensive MBA at Purdue University.  Mike just can’t get enough education!

Bryan Dailey (2006) has finished his Washington DC tour for the Coast Guard and is heading to North Carolina.  Bryan encourages us to “Keep hammering the students in "Intro to PADM," that class above all others has served me well.  Thanks for ripping my papers to shreds.”

Heather Blood  (2005) after graduation and a baby has recently been promoted to Senior Budget Analyst for NOAA Fisheries in the Southeast Regional Office (Florida).

Scott Powers (current student from Sitka) “assisted” in the birth of John Stephen Powers on January 19.  Congratulations Dad!

And in Entertainment news…..

Some of you may have seen the movie The Guardian, starring Kevin Costner and Aston Kutcher.  It is a story about the search and rescue activities of the US Coast Guard, and much of it takes place in Kodiak.  While it is a bit “Hollywood-ized” most Coast Guard members I have talked to liked the movie and say it gives a pretty good representation of what they do.  It’s out on DVD and I encourage you to see it.  We certainly greatly honor and appreciate those public servants who risk their lives to save ours.
