Spring and Summer 2011
Sanjay Pyare was promoted with tenure to Associate Professor.
UAS ENVS and Geography Students David Sauer and Jennifer Shinn will be working as research assistants for summer 2011 with Eran Hood and postdoc Andy Vermilyea. Their research will focus on the impacts of glacier change on soil development, aquatic habitat, and river hydrology. Jamie Bradshaw will be working with Cathy Connor on her investigations of Mendenhall Lake.
Sarah Ray is mentoring two UAS students, Kristie Livingston and Joshua Reeder, who received Undergraduate Student Awards for Research, Creative Activity and Scholarship.
Lisa Hoferkamp is mentoring an undergraduate student, Eric Keller, on a collaborative project with J. Kenneke from the US EPA National Environmental Exposure Laboratory in Athens, GA. They are developing microsomal assays for assessments of PBDE metabolic attenuation and mode of thyroid toxicity.
Mike Hekkers, Eran Hood, Cathy Connor, and UAS student David Sauer gave a Fireside Chat talk at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center entitled “Measuring Mendenhall: State of the Glacier” . March 4, 2011.
Eran Hood presented a talk entitled “Glaciers as an alpine source of freshwater and nutrients to marine ecosystems in southeastern Alaska” at the Alaska Chapter of the Wildlife Society annual conference in Juneau. April 7, 2011.
Eran Hood was an invited speaker at the workshop “Alaska Hydrologic Issues and Needs” hosted by the USGS Alaska Science Center in Anchorage. April 20-21, 2011.
Cathy Connor, Mike Hekkers, and Eran Hood conducted a geology and glaciology training for the incoming summer interpreters at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center in April 2011.
Lisa Hoferkamp served as reviewer on the 2011 National Science Foundation review panel for Major Research Instrumentation grants in the bioanalytical division. Apr 25 - 26, 2011.
Eran Hood presented a talk entitled “Landscape Controls on Organic Carbon Exports from Watersheds in the Tongass National Forest” at the US Forest Service Classrooms for Climate conference in Anchorage. May 4-7, 2011.
Cathy Connor presented a talk entitled “Undergraduate Research in Climate Change in Southeast AK Modern Juneau Icefield Glaciers” at the Alaska Space Grant Annual Meeting in Anchorage. May 17-18, 2011
Eran Hood, Mike Hekkers and Andy Vermilyea spent two days at Mendenhall Glacier working with a film crew on a new documentary about the glacier for the USFS Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center in late May.
UAS Geography Student Ethan Nichols presented a research poster at the Alaska EPSCoR All-hands Conference with Mathematics student Steve Ellison and faculty members Sanjay Pyare, David Tallmon, and Dan Monteith. May, 2011.
Sanjay Pyare co-led 4 workshops and symposia: (1) a Regional Geospatial Data Integration workshop with 35 US and Canadian agency partners at UAS, in partnership with the Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center; (2) a 1-day Climate-change Adaptation workshop in partnership with the Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center; (3) AERIAL: Alpine Ecosystem Research Initiative of
Alaska in association with the Wildlife Society conference in Juneau (including a presented paper "Spatio-temporal analysis of treeline productivity"; and (4) a 2 day workshop on Cartography, Google Earth, and Place-Based Learning for >50 teachers and principals from Alaska's high-needs school districts, in partnership with the UAS School of Education.
Cathy Connor attended the “Google Earth: Visualizing the Possibilities for Geoscience Education and Research”, Geological Society America Penrose Conference, Googleplex, Mountainview, CA (Jan 8-11, 2011), the Lily Arctic Conference in Fairbanks “Celebrating the Learning Community and Community of Learners” (March 3-5, 2011), and the Alaska Miners Annual Conference in Juneau (March 15-18, 2011).
