UAS Delegation at Ocean Sciences Bowl
Faculty Kelly Jensen, Carolyn Bergstrom, Sherry Tamone, and Anchorage based Admissions recruiter Rekann Keppinger travelled to Seward, AK for the 15th annual Tsunami Ocean Sciences Bowl.
The Ocean Sciences Bowl is a regional marine science competition among student teams from 20 high schools including Nome, Kotzebue, Mountain Village, Fairbanks, Seward Cordova, Skammon Bay, Homer, and Southeast Alaskan schools. Travel to the competition was supported by UAS (Bergstrom and Keppinger) and Alaska SeaGrant (Tamone and Jensen). The 3-day event allowed UAS members to speak to over 100 high school students considering their future college plans. The students from the top two winning teams received $2000 tuition waivers to attend UAS or UAF. Cordova’s "Nefarious DogSharks" took second place, and Juneau Douglas’s "Pelagic Magic" took top honors.
