- Description:

- Abstract:
-
This raster data set is one of thirteen digital images that make up a series: the Alaska Boundary Tribunal Map Collection. Surveys of these areas were conducted in the early 1900's and the map series was originally published in 1903.
- Purpose:
-
As snapshots in time, these rasters give the user an opportunity to chart geomorphological changes in the Southeastern Alaska area. These maps also provide historical glacier terminus positions and elevations.
- Supplemental_Information:
-
The images were flattened as best as possible to minimize distortion and were professionally photographed at 12 mega-pixels by Art Sutch of Juneau, Alaska in January 2005. These are .tif files and can be viewed with most software. Included with the .tif files are .tfw "world files" created when these rasters were georeferenced at UAS in March 2005. The Excel map index (22 KB .xls file) lists the major landmarks, glaciers and survey dates (when available) for each raster in the collection. A contact sheet (25 MB .tif file) displays the entire collection of rasters for quick viewing. The raster set is 1:250,000 scale and includes glacier elevations. A second raster set, also available from Spatial Data at UAS, is 1:160,000 in scale and does not include glacier elevations. Detailed library citation information is included below.

These data are in the public domain, but were made digital through the effort of several individuals and organizations. The paper maps are archived at the Alaska State Historical Library in Juneau, Alaska. Please cite the Alaska State Historical Library reference (below), UAF, UAS, and the Geophysical Institute when using or publishing these data. If any changes are made to the rasters, please update your metadata and cite your edits. No party is responsible for the content of the data.

These rasters were digitally photographed, not scanned, from the paper originals. As a result, some distortion/error was introduced prior to the georeferencing process. Once georeferenced (using a first-order affine "rubber-sheet" method) to the Alaska DNR 1:250,000 tics (Albers Equal Area Conic), the cumulative mean RMS error was roughly 90. The original map datum reads "Southeast Alaska Datum," though these maps were georeferenced using an Albers Equal Conic Area Proejction and Clarke 1866 Datum with little to no adjustment necessary.
