A note on GIS user facilites and abilities:

There are many levels of GIS users; this website is designed to serve several levels of data access and GIS data display.
  • Beginning and Novice GIS users will find the web-based Internet Map Services (IMS) easiest to use, as they do not require any GIS software, data decompression software, or GIS-specific training to access and manipulate GIS data. The available maps are viewable and editable using your internet browser, and the finished map is printable using your printer at home or work.
  • Intermediate, advanced, or professional GIS users who do not have access to ESRI ArcGIS or other licensed GIS products can download and use the various GIS freeware available through the Software Tutorial page. Once installed, GIS freeware can be used to download, unpack, and manipulate the spatial data available on our Data Download page. The web-based Internet Map Services are also useful tools for non-licensed GIS users.
  • Intermediate, advanced, or professional GIS users with licensed GIS software may prefer to skip the tutorial altogether and simply download data and metadata from the Data Download Page. Web-based Internet Map Services are also useful for previewing the data available through the Data Download page.
