GIS and Decompression Software

You will need decompression and data viewing software before you can use the data available from Spatial Data at UAS. The following tutorial includes a list of available decompression and viewing software that is readily available via the internet. This tutorial is written for Windows users.
If you have not downloaded a data file or don't know how, please refer to with our Download Tutorial.

Step 1: Gather Software Utilities

You will need:
  1. a software program that can decompress files
  2. a GIS application that will allow you to view decompressed data

There are many decompression programs and GIS applications available for use. Spatial Data at UAS does not promote the use of any particular programs or applications--we encourage you to try out a few and find one that works best for you. However, for the purposes of this tutorial, we'll download and install WinZip (a free evaluation decompression program) and ArcExplorer 2.0 (a free GIS application) on your machine.

To download WinZip and ArcExplorer 2.0, locate information on them below and use the links provided to download the software from their respective makers. Be sure to read some of the background information that the companies provide prior to downloading and be sure to follow the installation instructions included with each software application.

Once you have both applications installed, return to this page to continue the tutorial.
