Campus Safety and Security and Crime Statistic Reporting

At UAS, we care about your safety. While the campuses have been relatively safe environments in which to study and socialize, it is the responsibility of all students to be aware of and avoid potentially unsafe situations. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to report any crime or suspicious activity to a university official or local law enforcement.

Please call Facilities Services at 796-6496 weekdays 8am-5pm and after business hours and weekends 789-8237 (LJ alarm university answering service) to report any crime or safety concern on the Juneau campus. The UAS Safety officer can be reached directly at 796-6799. The university encourages you to report to local law enforcement.

Juneau Police can be reached at their business number at 586-0600. Ketchikan police business number is 225-6631. Sitka police business number is 747-3245. All emergencies dial 911 in your community.

The UAS campus crime statistics are compiled from an in-house database and with cooperation from the local law enforcement office. We use both systems as a check and balance for the crime statistics generated for the Clery Act. The crime statistics are based on a calendar year (January through December) not an academic year. These statistics are published and distributed each Fall Semester.

In October 2006 you will see statistics from 2003-2005 calendar years. The statistics are also entered in to the Department of Education web site. This is a federal requirement and is a means for the government to track compliance.

The Clery Act requires that all staff, faculty and students have access to these crime statistics. The web site is published in a safety brochure and is available on the UAS web site. Hard copies may be obtained at the Student Resource Center, 2nd Floor Novatney Building, Juneau Campus.

Pursuant to 20 United States Code section 1092(f ), the “Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act,” and the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) each institution of higher education in the United States which participates in federal student aid programs must produce and distribute an annual report containing crime statistics and statements of security policy. A failure to provide required information or the inclusion of inaccurate information can result in fines up to $27,500 per violation im- posed by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE).
