Placement Testing

All UAS students enrolling in Math or English courses must take placement tests prior to enrollment.  Students are only permitted to register for classes at or below the course level indicated by placement test results.  No appointment is required to take a placement test! Simply come to The Learning Center during our hours.

About the Tests

The testing software we use is Accuplacer for Math, English, and Ability-to-Benefit Tests.  The software SamChallenge is used for CIOS placement.

There is no time limit with any placement test. On average, students take 1 hour to complete the Math test, and 2.5 hours to complete the English test.  Please come early to allow yourself enough time to finish.

How to Study

We recommend that students spend at least a few days studying before taking the math placement test.  We have math textbooks available for checkout, and we can give advice regarding what material to study.  If you have specific math questions, the Learning Center math tutors are ready to help you study!  Simply come to the learning center during our hours and study with us.

Test Results

You will receive computer-scored results immediately after the completion of the test.  Your final English test results may take up to 2 days, as a reader will have to evaluate the essay.  If you are concerned about the validity of your placement, please talk to a staff member after the exam.

Retakes

We charge $15 for retakes and require that students wait at least a week before retaking.  Students retaking the ATB test, however, are required by federal guidelines to wait a minimum of two weeks before a retake.

Remote Placement

Students wishing to take a placement test before arriving in Juneau need to find an exam proctor.  Click here to download the proctor agreement form.

Ability-to-Benefit

Degree-seeking individuals 18 years or older who have not earned a highschool diploma or GED must take the ATB Test, in order to demonstrate that they have the ability to benefit from a college education.  To demonstrate this ability, the individual must achieve the following federally determined accuplacer scores:

Arithmetic: 34

Reading Comprehension: 55

Sentence Skills: 60

If individual has already completed 60 college credits, the ATB test is not necessary.  Individuals taking the ATB test on Accuplacer are permitted to retake the entire test after a 14-day waiting period.  The ATB provision does not allow candidates to retake only a portion of the test: all three parts of Accuplacer must be completed in one sitting.  It is very important to inform the test proctor if you are testing under Ability-to-Benefit, to insure you will be administered the correct tests.  The regular Accuplacer test cannot be used to validate Ability-to-Benefit.
