Q: The Unofficial transcript
from the UAS transfer Website I received is not the same as the worksheet
and
the transcript I received; why is that?
A: A Transcript is an academic
record of your courses completed and lists only the courses UAS has accepted
for transfer. The Transfer Equivalency
Worksheet lists the courses taken at your previous university
or college and how those courses transfer to UAS. The UAS Academic
Secured Website displays
only the UAS course equivalencies transferred, not the courses you have
transferred from your previous college. The UAS Transfer Student
Website the
database collection of the articulation (unofficial evaluation) of courses
from many
colleges and their equivalencies.
Q: Why don’t credits from all
institutions transfer to UAS?
A: UAS will transfer only college level credit from
institutions that are accredited by one of the following Regional accrediting
agencies:
- Middle States Assoc. of Colleges and Schools
- North Central Assoc. of Colleges and Schools
- New England Assoc. of Colleges and Schools
- Northwest Assoc. of Schools and Colleges
- Southern Assoc. of Colleges and Schools
- Western Assoc. of Schools and Colleges
Regional accreditation by these
agencies demonstrates that the college meets acceptable levels of
educational quality.
Q: Can I apply my military service towards my degree
at UAS?
A: Yes, UAS evaluates documented military credit from
CCAF, AARTS, SMART, Coast Guard Institute transcripts, as well
as DD214
and DD295 forms.
Evaluations are done using the recommendations from
the American Council on Education
(ACE). Additional information about military credit
is available in the UAS catalog or contact the SOC Advisor, 465-6457 or tol-free at 1-877-465-4827.
Q:
While I was in high school, I took an Advanced Placement Exam. Can I
use this towards my degree at UAS?
A: Yes, UAS awards credit for scores of “3” or
higher on a variety of exams. Refer to the UAS
catalog for further information
under
Credit by
Examination.
Q: Why does a “D” on a transcript
from an institution outside the state of Alaska NOT
transfer to UAS, when a “D” from
UAF does transfer to UAS?
A: Grades of “D” or above
are transferable within the University of Alaska systems;
however, they may not be acceptable to satisfy academic
major requirements. A “2.0” or higher is
required from all institutions outside of the University
of Alaska Systems.
Q: My transfer evaluation shows 2.67
credits for English S111. Do I still have to take English
S111 or can I
make up .33 credits
of
English?
A: Transfer credit equivalents vary
among semester, unit, and quarter colleges. Courses
equated to UAS
course that
are short
1.00 credit
or less meet UAS
course requirements without requiring a petition. To
complete credit requirements greater than 1.00 credits,
you can
take another UAS
class.
Q: I am coming to UAS from another Country. How
does my transcript get evaluated?
A: International transcripts must
be evaluated by a Foreign Credentials Agency prior
to the UAS evaluation.
Please
see a list of acceptable
agencies and
additional information in the UAS
college catalog under
Transfer Credit Policies and International Student
Admissions Requirements.
If you
would like more
specific information, contact the Credentials Evaluator,
Georgia Sepel, at 465-6366, or visit the Juneau Campus
in the Novatney
Building, in
the Admissions
Office.
Q: I am a graduate student and I wish to pursue
another bachelor’s
degree. Will my graduate classes transfer?
A: No, graduate
level course work cannot be used as an undergraduate
course for a bachelors degree program
unless
approved through
the petition process.
Q: I am transferring from a Vocational Tech Institute.
How will my coursework transfer if it does not match
any majors
offered
at UAS?
A: More importantly is the question, whether or not
the Voc Tech College is Regionally Accredited? If so,
we will
be
comparing individual courses
to UAS curriculum to determine the equivalencies. If
there are
no equivalencies, you will receive elective credit.
If your school is
not Regionally
Accredited, unfortunately, we cannot transfer any credits.
Q:
I’m transferring from UAA and have earned
an Associates of Arts degree. Will my degree transfer
or
do I need to
start over again?
A: Students who have earned an Associate of Arts degree
from another UA institution will be deemed to have
met all GER
requirements at UAS, unless
there are
specific degree requirements. (A minimum of Math 107
or its equivalent must be completed for a baccalaureate
degree
if
not included
in
the GER’s
from the transferring campus; some bachelor degrees
require foreign language, calculus, history sequences,
etc).
Q: When I received my evaluation worksheet, one
of my classes transferred as “Need Additional
Information.” What
does that mean? What can I do about this to receive
proper credit for this course?
A: “Need additional Information” indicates
that UAS has insufficient information about the coursework
taken
at your previous college. Please
contact the UAS admissions office at 465-6350 or toll free at 1-877-465-4827 ext. 6350 to discuss how you can
expedite the evaluation.
We can
contact the University
you attended for a course description, or you should
request a course syllabus from your previous school
so that we
can evaluate the coursework.
Remember, the Student
Transfer Website is unofficial and to receive transfer credit
from any college you
have attended,
you must
submit official transcripts
to UAS and be officially admitted to a UAS degree
program. We hope we have answered your questions; but if not,
you are
