TRiO Services

TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) provides a supportive environment where students can feel comfortable receiving assistance to complete their education.  TRiO SSS provides the following services:

Individual and Group Tutoring

Need a tutor for a difficult class?  TRiO can offer individual and/or group tutoring above and beyond Learning Center Services.  To download the tutor request form, please click  HERE ( PDF | 75Kb), and return the request to the TRiO Office.

TRiO Scholarships

To be eligible for TRiO SSS Program grant aid, students must be "active" TRiO participants in their first two years of postsecondary study (under 60 credit hours) as well as be eligible to receive Federal Pell Grants.  Grant aid may be offered to students who have completed their first two years of postsecondary study (over 60 credit hours) if (1) TRiO SSS has first met the needs of all its eligible first and second-year students, (2) the upper classmen students are eligible to receive Federal Pell Grants, and (3) the students are at high risk of dropping out of college.

All TRiO SSS students considered for scholarships from the TRiO Program must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA, be in good academic standing with UAS, and have a 67% course completion rate.  There is no paperwork involved.  Students will be selected by program staff based on eligibility.  Grant aid will typically be distributed in the middle or end of the semester, after the official withdrawal date.

Furthermore, the amount of grant aid distributed by the TRiO Program will be determined by the amount of funds available and the number of students eligible each semester.

Referral to Community and University Resources

TRiO understands the importance of having secure funding, housing, child care, disability services, and transportation to complete your education.  If you need assistance with finding child care services, affordable housing, disability services, and food assistance as well as applying for tribal or scholarship funding, please contact the TRiO office.  TRiO staff can help you complete applications, contact community agencies, and provide you internet access to perform research.

For a listing of local community resources, please click HERE ( PDF | 77Kb) to view the TRiO Student Resource Contact Booklet.

Equipment Loan Program

TRiO SSS has laptop computers, graphing calculators, and USB jump drives available for check-out.

Laptops are available for one-week check-out, and the graphing calculators and USB jump drives are available for semester long check-out.

To download the equipment loan request form, please click HERE ( PDF | 35Kb), and return the request to the TRiO Office.

Scholarship / FAFSA Application Assistance

TRiO staff are available to help you complete and submit your FAFSA and scholarship applications.  If you need assistance, call the TRiO office to make an appointment.

For more information on Federal Financial Aid, please go to the FAFSA homepage at www.fafsa.org.

Academic and Career Advising

TRiO staff are available anytime to talk with students about their courses and degree of study.  The Director and Academic Coordinator preadvise students on course registration and can complete a degree checksheet to let students know what degree requirements they have accomplished.

About to graduate?  Not sure what the next step is after graduation?  TRiO staff can help you get started.  Also, go visit Steve Laing at the UAS Career Services program.  A great Website to visit is AKCIS www.akcis.org.

Support for Students with Disabilities

TRiO SSS works very closely with the UAS Disability Support Services Coordinator, Susan Wylie, to provide services to students with disabilities.

Susan Wylie can be reached at susan.wylie@uas.alaska.edu or (907) 796-6000.

Transfer and Graduate/Professional School Advising

Are you moving or planning to attend another University?  TRiO can help you research other colleges and programs of study.

Academic Success Workshops

TRiO SSS hosts and partners with other UAS programs/services to present workshops that help foster academic success for TRiO students.  All workshops are free, and TRiO students are encouraged to attend at least one workshop during the fall and spring semesters.

Cultural Activities

TRiO students are encouraged to attend at least one cultural event during the academic year. TRiO Program is distributing tickets to the Perseverance Theatre among TRiO students at mid-terms.

Peer Mentoring

Peer mentors are available to help TRiO students set realistic educational, personal, and career goals as well as to provide academic, personal, and social support to TRiO students.  Peer mentors have at least a sophomore standing so they have the experience and knowledge to help other UAS students navigate university programs and community services.
