Since 1981 The Whalesong has been the student newspaper for the University of Alaska Southeast. Published every other Monday during the semester, it is a free publication with a circulation of 1000 copies per issue. The Whalesong’s primary audience includes students, faculty, staff, and community members at the three UAS campuses – Juneau, Ketchikan and Sitka.
As a student publication, the Whalesong encourages participation and contributions from students. Anyone interested in contributing to the Whalesong can contact the editor or adviser.
The Whalesong strives to inform readers on news pertinent to the college community and to serve as a public forum for the free exchange of ideas. The staff of The Whalesong values accuracy. Title	STUDENT ASSISTANT IV - Whalesong Production Manager
Responsible to	Whalesong Advisor
Position Summary	The Production Manager will work with the Whalesong Editor, Advertising Manager and reporting staff to produce camera-ready pages for production of the student newspaper. He/she will coordinate the production schedule and proofread the final copy. The Production Manager will also be responsible for on-campus and community distribution f the printed paper..
Qualifications	Must be enrolled in Journalism 294, 394 or 494 - Whalesong class. Must have strong written communication skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure in order to meet established deadlines. Ability to interact positively with other students in creating student newspaper. Working knowledge of layout and page design. Ability to use Pagemaker and Word processing software on Macintosh or PC computer.
Major Duties	1. Oversee production schedule of newspaper. 2. Handle production and layout of the student newspaper. 3. Supervise proofreading and correction of errors in final copy. 4. Produce camera-ready pages incorporating copy and photos. 5. Responsible for timely distribution of Whalesong to campus and community.
Hours	Unusual hours based on Whalesong production schedule. May include some evening/weekend hours.
Compensation	$500.00 stipend per semester, paid in bi-monthly installments, includes in-state tuition waiver--up to 12 credit hours.
Beginning Date	As position becomes available and as need arises.
