How to get involved

You can become involved with the Whalesong in numerous ways - as a journalism student, a volunteer, or a paid employee. It is offered for credit as a journalism practicum or on a voluntary basis to other students. In an effort to accommodate full and part-time student schedules and to keep costs as reasonable as possible, the course is offered for variable credit (students can choose between 1, 2, or 3 credits). The students produce about 12 issues per year. The student editor, production manager and advertising manager, are paid positions. The editor and production manager get a stipend and free tuition while the advertising manager gets a salary and a commission.

What it can do for you

Learning to write clearly and concisely is a basic skill needed to succeed in any liberal arts field. Working on the student newspaper offers students a chance to write on a regular basis under deadline pressure. The advertising manager position offers a business student, real-world experience in dealing with sales and tracking revenue. The production manager position and on-line editor position offer experience with technology that can be used in a variety of fields. A technical adviser works with the students and provides instruction and technical support when needed.

The newspaper has always attracted students from both genders, all age groups and a variety of races and cultural groups.

The student newspaper is affiliated with student government and student services and as such aids the goals of that department in providing opportunities for students to develop their leadership potential and social skills while assisting in their academic success.

Policies and Procedures

The Whalesong is managed by the three-member student staff. Articles are not reviewed by the university administration prior to publication. Editorial opinion and article content are controlled by the students although the adviser/instructor has the authority to remove items that might be considered libelous or slanderous.
