2008 Campus crime statistics released
JUNEAU — Campus crime statistics for the 2008 calendar year were published on the University of Alaska Southeast website.
According to the statistics, there were three burglaries and one motor vehicle theft during the year as well as referrals for 18 liquor law violations and 22 drug law violations on campus.
The University is required to publish the statistics due to the Clery Act. The statistics for the past three years can be found at http://www.uas.alaska.edu/future/shared-popups/crime-stats.html. There are categories for murder, forcible sex offenses, aggravated assault and arson as well as burglary and motor vehicle theft.
In 2007, there were four aggravated assaults and two burglaries and in 2006, two burglaries and four arrests for liquor law violations.
The site also lists the crime statistics for the Ketchikan and Sitka campuses for which there are no entries in the past three years.
Governor proposes scholarship fund
JUNEAU — The Juneau Empire reported that Gov. Sean Parnell has proposed putting $400 million of the state’s saving aside for a new merit-based scholarship program.
In order to get the scholarship, the students would have to take four years of math, language arts and science as well as three years of social sciences to qualify but “A” average students would get 100 percent tuition scholarship, “B” averages 75 percent and “C” averages 50 percent.
An estimated 2,889 students would receive benefits from the Governor’s Performance Scholarship.
The scholarship program will have to be approved by the legislature with the funds coming from either the Statutory Budget Reserve or the Constitutional Budget Reserve.
Student Government elections yield
impressive turnout
JUNEAU — The recent student government elections attracted an impressive turnout of over 100 people. Junior and English Major, Tyler Preston was voted in president by nearly a 2:1 margin over his competitors.
Preston’s campaigned under the theme “Rock the Vote” and coated the campus with chalk both before and during the elections. He even hosted a chalk party outside of the Mourant building where Preston provided chalk for any student who wanted to stop by and draw.

Student Worker of the Month, Sept.
Jessica Chauvot, the lead Peer Advisor at the Student Resource Center, is September’s Student Worker of the Month. Chauvot is a Business Administration major and a sophomore.
Chauvot has been working as a Peer Advisor for almost a year and a half. As part of her duties, she works the front desk of the SRC, provides paraprofessional advice to other Peer Advisors and is involved with new employee hiring and training.
Chauvot was nominated by Deb Gregoire, the coordinator of Academic Advising and Student Resource Center.
In her nomination, Gregoire said, “Jess has an excellent personality, making her a great fit for her position in the SRC. She is unfailingly kind, patient, and thorough with students, both in person and on the phone. This is of utmost importance as the Peer Advisors interface with a huge cross section of the student body, UAS staff, faculty and administration, as well as the greater Juneau and Southeast communities.”
Chauvot was unavailable for comment as she is away visiting her family.
The Sitka Campus celebrates 20 years on Japonski island
The University of Alaska Southeast Sitka campus hosted an Open House to celebrate 20 years at their current location.
The campus moved to its present location. a renovated World War II hangar, in 1987 from the building that now serves as the Raptor Center on Sawmill Creek Road.
The campus also revealed expansion plans to the community for the new Health Science wing construction that will be starting soon.
Demonstrations abounded throughout the building including cow’s eye dissection in the biology lab, construction and welding demos in the hangar, learning Tlingit language from audio files, drawing and pottery demos in the art room, and blood pressure and hand washing by the Certified Nurse Aides and the Nursing students in the Nursing room.
The Russian Archangel Dancers gave a short performance towards the end of the afternoon activities.
Annual Alumni Beer and Wine tasting to be Oct. 23
The 9th Annual UAS Alumni & Friends Beer and Wine Tasting is on Friday, October 23 from 6-8 PM at TK Maguire’s restaurant in the Prospector Hotel.
This annual “friend-raiser” brings Juneau area community members together for a night of fun food, drink and networking. The evening begins at 6 PM.
Attendees are given a tasting program and a wine glass to use as they visit the four local vendors who are sponsoring the event. These include Specialty Imports, Odom Corporation, K&L Distributors, and the Alaskan Brewing Company. Heavy appetizers are hosted by UAS Alumni & Friends.
