I have taught at three different universities and I have chosen to stay at UAS for two reasons. First, I love the diversity of our student body. The age, racial, and experiential diversity makes for wonderful classroom discussions. As a creative writing professor I love the stories our students are able to bring to their work; many of them have had rich life experiences that translate into good stories and poems. Second, I love the smallness of UAS. I like seeing students in beginning composition classes and then again a few years later in advanced writing classes. It’s such a reward to see how their writing has progressed throughout their college experience. At UAS I really get to know my students and become invested in their lives, which for me, is what teaching is all about.
