Teacher.org has named the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) as one of Alaska’s Best Value Teacher Prep Master’s Programs. The UAS program was selected for its flexible learning options including both on-campus and online delivery, and for serving as the home for the Alaska College of Education, which creates partnerships and collaborations between UA schools to ensure outstanding teacher education.

To be included in the list, Teacher.org only considers schools accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) or one of the two bodies that merged into CAEP in 2016 -- the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) or the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC). UAS is currently accredited through NCATE.

Teacher.org is a website for teachers by teachers, which aims to continuously inform and encourage teaching. According to the site, the UAS programs “aren't just your ticket to an affordable master's degree program and initial teacher license - they provide an opportunity for you to make a difference in Alaska's schools. These programs are offered through University of Alaska's College of Education, a new college within UAS that provides statewide leadership in coordination with all UA universities, ensuring that graduates are prepared to become effective educators capable of meeting the unique needs of students in Alaska. Just a couple of the ways UAS positions MAT students for success include the fact that it offers both online and on-campus options and provides outstanding internships in both urban and rural environments.”

The Alaska College of Education’s Executive Dean Steve Atwater is pleased to see this recognition. He states, “The three recognized programs are designed to meet the varying needs of the students. The faculty do an excellent job accommodating their students, many of whom are professionals changing careers to the teaching profession.”

UAS offers Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degrees in Elementary Education K-8, Secondary/Middle Grades Education, and Special Education, all of which are offered in both a traditional classroom environment as well as online, as are its Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and Special Education.
