UAS awarded National Society of Leadership and Success First Year Grant

The University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) has been selected as a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS).

Juneau, Alaska

Date of Press Release: April 15, 2021

The University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) has been selected as a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS). The NSLS is the largest leadership honor society and collegiate leadership development program in the country. Under Chancellor Carey’s leadership, UAS received a first year grant to join NSLS.

The NSLS is a “life-changing leadership program that helps students achieve personal growth, career success and empowers them to have a positive impact in their communities,” according to its website. It provides accredited leadership development programming to their chapters. There are over 700 chapters of NSLS, and there are over 1.4 million members nationwide.

UAS will invite second-semester freshman and sophomores to join starting Fall 2021 and provide a scholarship fund to help offset the cost of individual membership. Students will participate for one semester and then have the opportunity to continue their membership and engage as mentors to incoming students. UAS will be offering this program asynchronously to include Juneau, Sitka and Ketchikan students, and there is also an opportunity to build local, in-person engagement activities for participating students.

The program will be managed out of the division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. Dean of Students Jackie Wilson remarked, “NSLS has a reputation for offering quality programming and engagement opportunities that impact persistence and retention at the institutional level. UAS is adding this honor’s society to our retention toolbox.”
