Clinozoisite (Silicate-Sorosilicate)


Hardness: 6.0 - 6.5
Specific Gravity: 3.1 -3.4

Characteristics: Light green to gray; vitreous luster; striated crystals; perfect cleavage in one direction, imperfect in another; transparent to translucent; insoluble in most acids.

Found in amphibolites; grossular schists; slates; quartzites; contact metamorphic rocks; hydrothermal alteration of anorthitic (calcic) plagioclases in intrusives.

Some of the many uses of chrysotile include asbestos cement, insulation boards, lagging to pipes and boilers, sprayed fire-protective coatings, fireproof yarns, ropes, clothing and blankets, gaskets and brake linings.
