Statewide Municipal Sales Tax Administrator

The Alaska Municipal League is seeking applications from interested persons for the position

Works under the general direction of the Executive Director, in coordination with the Program Manager.


  •  Participate in the development and implementation of the centralized administration of municipal remote sales tax collection, remittance and reporting. Early stages will require conducting the work associated with those functions and working with the board of directors to scale up the program
  •  Develops processes and procedures for administration of the collection, remittance and reporting of sales taxes under the authority of the Alaska Remote Sales Tax Commission, and as delegated by individual local governments. Assures that all required notices, postings, deadlines, and other guidelines are met in the tax collection system. Oversees the daily receipt of payments and assures all money received is properly accounted for and deposited in the appropriate accounts.
  •  Reviews tax files, records, and reports for accuracy. Develops, implements and manages computer software and contract for taxing operations.
  •  Supervise the audit function to conduct sales tax investigations and audits of taxpayers to ensure compliance with the ARSTC remote sales tax code; collaborate and confer with taxpayers before and after the audit; explain audit procedures to taxpayers being audited; review and evaluate taxpayer accounting records; prepare detailed audit work papers and audit report narratives to document and substantiate audit procedures and findings; prepare detailed reports and recommendations; monitor previously audited taxpayers for continued compliance with borough/municipality ordinances; provide assistance on or perform complex audits; develop, implement and update sales and use tax auditing standards and procedures.
  •  Interpret and explain to any person engaged in business the legal provisions, regulations and procedures required for business licensing, sales tax collection and use tax payments; pursue advance collection issues according to law and due process; work with Finance Officer, sales tax staff and legal staff to resolve tax issues, delinquencies and enforcement activities.
  •  Achieve and maintain advanced working knowledge of business licensing and sales tax collection trends, issues and processes; and legal, investigational and ethical aspects of collections and related resources.


  •  Performs other assignments and projects as assigned by the Executive Director, and/or in support of the Board of Directors. 
  •  Perform related duties and responsibilities, as required.


A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Accounting,
Finance, Business or Public Administration, or a closely related field required. C.P.A. preferred but not
required. Three (3) years of progressively responsible professional financial auditing or tax
administration experience required, preferably sales tax related. Local Government Finance experience
strongly preferred. At least one (1) year of management experience is required. A combination of
experience and knowledge will be considered.

Salary will depend on experience, but an annual salary may range between $75,000 and $95,000, with
benefits including full health coverage, retirement match, and additional, standard benefits.
