The University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) School of Career Education is hosting an open house on Wednesday, August 22nd from 3:00 to 6:00 pm at the UAS Technical Education Center, located at 1415 Harbor Way, across from Juneau-Douglas High School. Fall semester classes begin on August 27. The open house is especially focused on prospective students who want to take advantage of a 25 percent tuition savings and a one-time $100 savings in fees. The open house will showcase Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes and programs and help students enroll in classes that begin on August 27. Prospective students, current students, industry partners, community leaders, alumni and friends, and the general public are encouraged to attend.

Students who enroll in classes during the event will not only get the tuition discount but will receive a one-time $100 off fall semester fees. Door prizes will be available and refreshments will be served.  Advisors will be available to answer questions. Attendees can meet employers who are looking for people skilled in technical education fields.  Tours will be offered of each department including Health Sciences, Construction, Power Technology, Mining, and Welding.  Participants can even try out the state-of-the-art mine simulator.

UAS Career Education Dean Pete Traxler encourages prospective students to come and check out exciting CTE opportunities: “Are you just out of high school, currently unemployed, or finding that you don’t quite love your job as much as you thought you would? Come find out how to get trained for your dream job while enjoying some free food and fun!”

The University of Alaska is reducing tuition by 25 percent on selected occupational endorsement programs and CTE courses. The tuition reduction is part of the university’s plan to increase CTE enrollments, promote degree completion, and meet Southeast Alaska’s workforce needs. Many of the applicable programs are in high-demand workforce areas such as welding, certified nurse aide, medical billing, phlebotomy, bookkeeping, office management, and construction technology.

These skill-based programs are ideal for employers looking to develop their employees’ skills in a cost-effective way, or for individuals looking to change careers or increase credentials while seeking employment. These programs also provide an effective mechanism for dual enrollment students to access university programs while still in high school and to become qualified for entry-level positions and jobs.
