Date of Press Release: July 15, 2010

The University of Alaska Southeast is restructuring Student Services leadership and welcoming a new Dean of Education and Dean of Professional and Technical Studies.

Joe Nelson, J.D., has been promoted from Director of Admissions to Dean of Enrollment Management.  Jessie Grant, Ph.D., has been promoted from Director of Activities and Housing to Dean of Students.  The appointments were made after the retirement of Vice Chancellor for Student Services Bruce Gifford who returned to UAS in 2008. He retired after serving UAS over the course of more than 25 years.

Larry Harris also retired as Dean of Education, a position he held since 2006. New Dean of Education Deborah Lo is scheduled to start work August 1. A native of the Florida Keys, Lo's background as an educator includes a variety of positions including both national and international work as a teacher, researcher and administrator.

Lo most recently served as chair of the Department of Elementary, Early and Special Education for Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Prior to her position at Southeast Missouri, Lo was chair of the Education Department at the University of Scranton, a Jesuit University in Scranton Pennsylvania.  Dr. Lo earned a doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Chicago and a bachelor’s and master's degree from Florida State University.

"It is truly an honor to be selected as the incoming dean for UAS's School of Education," says Lo. "It is clear that the faculty have a passion for developing and maintaining quality education programs that result in educators who are held in high regard. My challenge will be to help maintain and build a competitive edge both in Alaska and nationally."

Also coming on board August 1 is Dr. Steven Krause as Dean of Professional and Technical Studies.  Krause will oversee UAS Management and Career Education programs. Dr. Karen Schmitt formerly held the post and moved to the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2009.

Dr. Krause most recently served as Chair of Business at Concordia University in Portland, Oregon. He completed his doctoral work at Texas Tech University, holds a BS in Physics, a Masters Degree in Human Resources Management, and is an honors graduate, National Defense University, Washington, D.C.

Dr. Krause arrived at Concordia University in 1999 after spending three years with the Boeing Company under a Department of Defense contract to train B1 Bomber combat aviators.  He also completed a 20-year career as a USAF officer while holding a variety of command and administrative positions in two combat flight training schools.

"I have been very impressed with the people I have met at the University of Alaska Southeast," said Krause. “When students arrive for fall classes, it creates quite a buzz, which in turn re-energizes campus life and provides spark to the learning environment. I look forward to all the "fun" and am ready for all the opportunities and challenges which we will face together."
