Perseverance Theatre and the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) are partnering to present the first lecture of the Spring 2011 Sound and Motion Arts at Egan series 7:30pm, Friday, January 7, 2011 at the Egan Lecture Hall on the UAS campus. The title of the evening’s lecture is "Transformations of The Blue Bear: Wilderness and Friendship from Page to Stage."
In conjunction with Perseverance Theatre's premier of The Blue Bear, author Lynn Schooler will speak on how the quest for the elusive glacier bear created a deep bond between him and Japanese nature photographer Michio Hoshino. Playwright Luan Schooler, who is also Lynn's sister, will discuss the challenges and rewards in adapting that story of friendship for live dramatic performance at Perseverance Theatre.
Author and photographer Lynn Schooler has lived in Alaska over 40 years. Schooler has written four books: The Blue Bear, Last Shot, Walking Home, and Heartbroke Bay, the latter published under his pseudonym Lynn D’Urso. He has twice won Alaska magazine’s grand prize for wildlife photography and the National Wildlife Grand Prize for photography, in addition to numerous literary awards. Playwright Luan Schooler was a Perseverance Theatre company member for several years and acted in many productions including The Faraway Nearby, Mineola Twins, and Wonderland. After leaving Juneau, she worked at the Denver Center Theatre, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, California Shakespeare Festival, and was the Literary Manager/Dramaturg for Berkeley Repertory Theatre.
The Blue Bear opens January 14 at Perseverance Theatre.
