Evening at Egan: Prokofiev's "War Sonata" and selections in honor of Liszt's 200th Birthday

Juneau’s favorite visiting pianist and music scholar, Dr. Alexander Tutunov will kick off the 2011 Fall Evening at Egan Series at the University of Alaska Southeast.

Juneau’s favorite visiting pianist and music scholar, Dr. Alexander Tutunov will kick off the 2011 Fall Evening at Egan Series at the University of Alaska Southeast.
Tutonov will be performing a concert that is challenging for both the performer and the audience. The center of the program will be Sonata No. 7 in B Flat Major, Op. 83, by Sergei Prokofiev, dubbed as "The War Sonata.”  Dr. Tutunov will also celebrate the 200th Birthday of Franz Liszt with a talk on Mr. Liszt and his influence on Western music.

The program includes Liszt the poet: the composer’s settings of two of Petrarch's Sonnets and his own arrangement, the Liebestraum (the "Dreams of Love"); Liszt the promoter/arranger: Schumann - Liszt: "Widmung",  Mozart - Liszt: "Lacrimosa" and Schubert - Liszt: "Stådtchen"; Liszt the mystic: "Nuages Gris" (Gray Clouds) and finally Liszt the Nationalist with Hungarian Rhapsody No. 15, "Rackoczi March.”

Dr. Alexander Tutunov earned his undergraduate degree at the Central Music School of the Moscow Conservatory.  He was awarded his doctoral diploma with honors in concert performance by the Belarussian State Conservatory and was a pianist with the Belarussian National Philharmonic. Dr. Tutunov won first prize in the Belarussian National Piano Competition and was a winner in the Russian National Piano Competition.  He has taught at the Minsk College of Music, the University of North Texas, and Illinois Wesleyan University.  Currently he is Professor of Piano and Artist in Residence at Southern Oregon University and is the artistic director of the Chinese-American International Piano Institute in Chengdu, China.  He maintains a busy performance schedule in Europe, China, Mexico, and the United States.
