Dissertation: "The Environmental Rhetoric of American Hunting and Fishing Narratives: A Revisionist History" (Chair: Suzanne Clark).

Exploring the relationship between hunting and fishing narratives and the environmental movement that emerged in the Unites States around the turn of the twentieth century, I argue that sporting narratives--replete with their problematic celebration of machismo, weaponry, and death--should be part of any consideration of literary environmentalism. Beginning with a rhetorical analysis of "hook and bullet" stories published in popular late-nineteenth century magazines, I contend that one must be aware of the environmental tropes and figures prevalent in these popular hunting and fishing narratives to fully comprehend the environmental import of texts like Ernest Hemingway's Under Kilimanjaro, D'Arcy McNickle's The Surrounded, and William Faulkner's Go Down, Moses.
