News for Staff

Fall 2017 Convocation Staff Assembly:

On Aug. 23, UAS Staff Council members in Juneau held the annual Staff General Assembly meeting. During the meeting, staff members were asked to answer two questions:

1. People care about doing a good job. With this in mind, how do you know you are doing a good job?

2. The first question impacts all levels of our organization. How can we effectively communicate this to each other (especially supervisors to staff)?

After answering these questions, they were recorded and shared with the Chancellor's Cabinet. The cabinet subsequently answered similar questions. The results of both meetings can be found below.

Chancellor's comments regarding 2017 Alaska FY18 budget impasse:

June 20, 2017

Dear UAS staff and faculty:

As Chancellor I’m writing to keep you informed about possible impacts of a budget impasse in the Alaska State Legislature should we fail to see an approved UA operating budget before July 1. As I write this, we continue to face considerable budget uncertainty. Negotiations in the Legislature are ongoing and very fluid. Our goal is to keep you well informed about any changes as they develop.

Importantly, I want to emphasize that—even absent an operating budget—UAS will continue to provide student instruction, provide housing and food service in support of that instruction, and ensure the health, safety, and security of our campuses. I’ve just sent an email to all UAS students reaffirming that we will continue our core constitutional mission of providing quality instruction, now and into the coming academic year.

Having said this, a continuing impasse will likely mean that UA will soon send out furlough notices to many of our staff—those not directly responsible for the health, safety, and security of our campuses, or faculty involved in instruction. This action would scale back our operations temporarily until resolution is found. We are obliged to send such notices 30 days in advance of any furlough. Thus, no furloughs would take place until August 2 at the earliest. As soon as an operating budget is approved, these furlough notices will be rescinded.

Like you, I’m very unhappy about this situation. Furloughing staff due to budget uncertainty is new to UA, and we’re doing our best to answer the questions you’ll have. I strongly encourage you to visit the following website for updated information and FAQs:

As this situation develops over the next few days, I’ll email again to keep you informed about additional updates, including communications from President Johnsen and the Board of Regents. Please don’t hesitate to email my office if you have specific questions or concerns:

Thank you for your patience in these challenging and uncertain times. I value the work you do every day to support our students and to make UAS a great place to learn, live, and work.
